FAMA: Ceval, it’s a pleasure to have you with us today. You’ve achieved so much in your career, breaking barriers and redefining beauty standards. To start, can you share with us who you are and how your background and childhood have shaped you into the person you are today?

CEVAL OMAR: Thank you for having me. I’m Ceval Omar, a model from Oslo, Norway, with Somali roots. Growing up in Oslo, a city known for its diversity and progressive values, my childhood was a unique blend of Norwegian and Somali cultures. This rich cultural heritage has profoundly influenced my perspective and identity. It has taught me resilience and the importance of embracing diversity and staying true to oneself. These experiences have shaped my approach to life and work, allowing me to bring a rich cultural background into my role in the fashion industry.

FAMA: Reflecting on your journey, when would you say you had your big break?

CEVAL OMAR: My big break came in 2020 when I became the face of hope for the 26th issue of Vogue. Being the first trans woman to achieve this milestone was a defining moment in my career. It not only catapulted me into the international spotlight but also provided a significant platform to represent trans women globally.

FAMA: Before your modeling career took off, what were you doing, and how did your transition into modeling happen?

CEVAL OMAR: Before modeling, I had recently moved back to Oslo and was working as a model scout for my mother agency. My transition into modeling was quite serendipitous. While working as a scout, I was discovered by two prominent casting directors who were looking for trans models. My agency, which at the time didn’t have trans models, sent them some of my photos from Facebook. They responded positively, and within just six hours, I was signed to three international agencies via Skype. It was an unexpected turn of events, but it felt like a natural progression, aligning my professional path with my personal identity and aspirations.

FAMA: Looking back, what has been your favorite modeling experience so far?

CEVAL OMAR: My favorite modeling experience was working on my Vogue cover with all my sisters. Being allowed to be the creative director for my cover made it an incredibly personal and memorable moment. It was a chance to express my vision while sharing this special experience with people I love.

FAMA: What do you think has allowed you to make waves and break down boundaries in the fashion industry?

CEVAL OMAR: I believe it’s the intersections I represent. As a trans woman of Somali-Norwegian heritage, I embody a diverse array of identities that challenge traditional norms in the fashion industry. This intersectionality resonates with many and serves as a powerful statement of inclusivity and representation.

FAMA: How do you view your role in the fashion world today?

CEVAL OMAR: I see my role as being a representative of diversity and authenticity. I aim to do my job well while staying true to myself. By being visible and vocal in the fashion industry, I hope to inspire others to embrace their true selves and challenge conventional beauty standards.

FAMA: In such a competitive industry, how do you maintain your confidence?

CEVAL OMAR: I’ve always believed that what’s meant for me will come to me, and what’s not, I try not to dwell on. I don’t take things personally and keep a positive outlook. This mindset helps me stay confident and focused on my goals despite the competitive nature of the industry.

FAMA: Working with major fashion houses like Victoria’s Secret, Nina Ricci, and YSL, what message do you want to convey through your new platform?

CEVAL OMAR: My message is to be true to oneself and approach life with love and light. Everyone deserves love, joy, and happiness. By embracing our true selves and showing kindness, we can contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate world.

FAMA: How has your life changed since stepping into the spotlight, and how do you hope to leverage this platform?

CEVAL OMAR: Since coming into the spotlight, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many inspiring individuals, growing my chosen family, and traveling the world. This journey has allowed me to live my wildest dreams. I hope to use this platform to continue advocating for inclusivity and diversity, and to inspire others to do the same.

FAMA: Who inspires you and motivates you to strive for greatness?

CEVAL OMAR: My chosen family is a constant source of inspiration. They support me unwaveringly and motivate me to reach for the stars while staying true to my values. Their support helps me strive for greatness in all aspects of my life.

FAMA: What advice would you give to a young person questioning their own gender identity?

CEVAL OMAR: Show yourself grace and kindness. No one has all the answers when starting out. Embrace your journey with love and light, and remember that you are deserving of happiness and self-discovery.

FAMA: With the rise of extremist political groups globally, how have these developments impacted you personally and professionally?

CEVAL OMAR: It’s disheartening and frightening to see our bodies being politicized and used to dehumanize us. We all have a fundamental right to exist and live without fear. I wish our governments would care for every life, as we all deserve protection and respect.

FAMA: Your social media highlights your support for the freedom of Palestine. What drives your advocacy for this cause, and how do you think public figures can use their platforms to promote social justice?

CEVAL OMAR: Harm to any human life affects us all. We should advocate for the voiceless and disenfranchised. Public figures can use their platforms effectively by raising awareness, supporting marginalized communities, and speaking out against injustices to promote social justice and human rights.

FAMA: Finally, as the first transgender black woman to grace the cover of an African magazine, FAMA, how do you feel about this historic milestone, and what message do you hope to convey through this achievement?

CEVAL OMAR: I am deeply humbled by the love and care from the team at FAMA. This milestone is a testament to the power of inclusivity and representation. Through this achievement, I hope to convey that our shared humanity connects us all. I want people to see the common humanity in us rather than viewing us as something alien. This moment highlights the importance of inclusivity and the impact it can have on the world.
